Science Bob Fluke Felder slid a metal ring clean through a finger, and nobody in the room could explain how. That impossibility is exactly the point: five tricks that look like magic but run entirely on physics, chemistry, and the brain’s stubborn habit of filling in what it cannot process fast enough. Former middle school science teacher and former middle school magician, Bob walked through each one with CrunchLabs founder Nate, and the line between a classroom demonstration and a genuine illusion turned out to be thinner than anyone expected.
When your brain invents what your eyes missed
The ring trick that opened the session works because of persistence of vision. Human eyes can only send a limited number of visual frames to the brain each second, so when a finger bends and straightens fast enough, the brain simply never receives that frame at all. Faced with a gap in the data, it fills in the most logical alternative: the ring passed through solid flesh. Bob demonstrated it cleanly; Nate tried it and Nate laughed too hard at himself for it to land, but the mechanism held.
Trick two looked like a cup-and-ball game using water, but there was never any water. The secret was a liquid-absorbing polymer pulled straight from the inside of a diaper, tucked into the bottom of one clear cup. Once water hit that powder, it vanished in seconds. As Bob put it: ‘You need to get your hands on some diapers. Go and say, hey, can I borrow a diaper? Yeah, that is not weird.’ The same polymer technology reappeared in trick five, where a sharp skewer passed through a fully inflated balloon without popping it, and then a rainbow of colored pencils punched through a bag of water without a single leak. The rubber and plastic seal around each puncture point fast enough that the water has nowhere to go, which Bob noted works best at the thicker, less-inflated ends of a balloon.
Salt water, ketchup, and a squeeze that changes everything
Trick three, the Cartesian diver, used a ketchup packet floating in a sealed bottle of salt water. Salt water is denser than plain water, which is why the ketchup floats at all; a packet dropped in fresh water just sinks. But when the bottle is squeezed, even an almost imperceptible amount of pressure compresses the tiny air bubble trapped inside the packet, increasing its density just enough to send it to the bottom. Release the bottle and it rises again. Bob cheerfully admitted the warmth-from-your-hand explanation he offered first was completely fabricated, which is, he pointed out, well within the job description of a magician.
Trick four required a balloon, a ring cut from a plastic bag, and Bob’s hair. Rubbing the balloon transferred a negative charge onto both objects, and because negative charges repel each other, the lightweight plastic ring lifted off and floated above the balloon like a slow-moving UFO. Nate cut a jellyfish shape and walked it around the room. The illusion of trick five with the pen and a round water bottle leaned on light diffraction: the curved surface of the bottle acts as a lens, and once the audience’s eyes locked onto the pen, swapping it out went completely unnoticed.
The colored pencils still standing in the bag
By the end of the session, a clear bag hung full of water with a dozen colored pencils jutting through its sides at every angle, and not a single drop was leaking.
Nate’s jellyfish, meanwhile, was still drifting somewhere near the ceiling.
