Research in the field links high levels of sedentary time to increased risk of diabetes, cancer, dementia, heart disease, and early death. The finding that tends to stop people is that this risk holds even for people who exercise regularly.
The mechanism lives in muscle tissue. Diaz describes muscles not just as engines for movement but as the body’s primary regulators of blood sugar. A regularly contracted muscle acts like a moist sponge, pulling glucose efficiently out of the bloodstream. The tobacco industry logic that points to a fix
The solution Diaz landed on came from an unlikely frame. When the tobacco industry needed to reach factory workers who could not step away for a full cigar, it invented the cigarette: a small, frequent dose spread across the day. If sitting is the new smoking, he reasoned, the counter-strategy should mirror that structure. Short movement breaks, a few minutes at a time, scattered throughout the day.
His lab tested the minimum effective dose. A five-minute walk at a casual two-miles-per-hour stroll, taken every 30 minutes, reduced the blood sugar spike after eating by about 60 percent. Diaz notes that is roughly the reduction a clinician would expect from putting someone on medication to manage blood sugar levels.
When he and his team ran a real-world experiment with more than 20,000 participants, asking people to take movement breaks anywhere from every 30 minutes to every two hours over two weeks, something unexpected happened. Most people liked it. They reported feeling less foggy, more focused, and noticeably more energized. Participants averaged only four to five breaks a day, well below the lab prescription, and still reduced their feelings of fatigue by about 25 percent. Even a one-minute walk once an hour produced measurable improvements in mood.
Diaz is honest about his own first reaction to these findings: ‘When I found out that this was the answer, I was disappointed. My immediate reaction was, there’s no way people are going to do this, largely because I couldn’t realistically do it myself.’

Diaz came home from that summer camp job tired every single day. Physically tired, in the specific way he describes as ‘a satisfied kind of tired where I’d use my body to complete a hard day’s work.’ The gap between that tiredness and the drained, foggy exhaustion of office work is, according to his research, not a matter of willpower or attitude.
