Beauty arrived at Mapapa with a leg so badly infected that doctors said amputation was the likely outcome and survival was not guaranteed. She was shy, afraid, and running out of time. But she was also at a place where someone had already given up everything to fight for children like her, and now a team was flying across the world to make sure she did not slip through the cracks. What unfolded over the next year at this rural village in Zambia was not a single act of charity but a full reconstruction, roof by roof, pipe by pipe, and in Beauty’s case, bone by bone.

Five years ago, Dora moved to Mapapa with four adopted children and no guarantee of anything beyond her own resolve. She started making TikTok videos to raise money for a school and village for children in desperate need. Her account grew to over 4 million followers, and today she cares for almost 400 children. She was feeding all of them largely by driving roughly an hour and a half each way, almost daily, to buy food on roads with no cell coverage. When her car was totaled in a wreck, Darren reached her by phone that same morning. ‘I want you to go look for a car, we will pay for it next week,’ he told her. A new vehicle arrived shortly after.
The infrastructure overhaul ran alongside the car situation. Beast Philanthropy and their partners from Give Power installed a solar array, then tripled the village’s solar generation capacity. A full hydrological study led to the construction of a proper well, and for many of the children, drinking clean water from that well was a first. Dora noted the physical change in the kids almost immediately. ‘We don’t have skin infections, we don’t have diarrhea anymore,’ she said. ‘Their confidence has just grown up because they’re in a clean, safe environment with clean water.’ The village also received a commercial gas stove, eliminating the daily burn through bags of charcoal.
Three surgeries and a girl who came back talking
Beauty’s case was referred to Cure International, an organization that also operates a hospital in Zambia. Doctors performed three operations over three months, and the outcome that initially looked impossible gradually became real. When Beauty was finally discharged, she was described by those who cared for her as a completely different person. ‘She just slowly changed into this bubbly, fun, talkative girl,’ one caregiver said. While she recovered, construction back at Mapapa kept pace, so that by the time she came home, her community had been transformed alongside her.
The final addition landed on the day Darren and Dan visited to see the finished project: a Starlink router, powered by the new solar grid, installed that same morning. Dora had previously stood outside for hours holding a pole above her head to find enough signal to upload a single video. Now she tested it on the spot by filming a TikTok with Darren and Dan in the courtyard, walking through it frame by frame until they landed a take she called ‘fire.’ The internet connection means Dora can upload from anywhere on the school grounds, generate more income, and reach help instantly if anything goes wrong.
A storm had torn through one of the dormitories the previous year, leaving it in ruins. Donations from the first visit funded the rebuild, and the finished structure came out stronger than the original.
