Jay Leno had the throttle pushed all the way forward, 85 knots rushing up on the display, and a Cirrus test pilot beside him saying ‘start to pull back’ before the nose lifted and a single-engine carbon fiber jet climbed away from the runway. For anyone who has ever wondered whether the gap between a driver and a pilot is as wide as it seems, what happened next makes a compelling case that it is narrowing fast. Matt Bergwall, executive director of the Vision Jet product line at Cirrus Aircraft, had offered Leno the controls for takeoff, walked him through the inputs in plain language, and watched him do it.
A jet that costs less than a Bugatti
The Cirrus Vision Jet Generation 3 starts the conversation at $3.6 million fully loaded, a figure that stopped Leno mid-sentence. He had assumed jet aircraft began at eight or nine million dollars, and the comparison he reached for was the Bugatti Chiron at roughly $5.2 million. ‘You get there a lot faster in this,’ he said, and left the math at that.
The aircraft seats six adults and up to seven passengers in a cabin shaped like an egg rather than the aluminum tube common to most planes. That egg shape is a direct consequence of the carbon fiber construction: the material can be molded, so Cirrus gave it shoulder room where passengers want shoulder room and headroom where they need headroom. Final assembly happens in Duluth, Minnesota, with customer deliveries handled out of Tennessee.
Power comes from a single Williams FJ33 engine producing 1,846 pounds of thrust. At cruise altitude the fuel burn settles to around 60 gallons per hour, a number Bergwall noted is ‘a very small number in terms of jet engines.’ Range runs to roughly a thousand miles depending on passenger load, enough for regional hops on the scale of New York to Chicago without a stop.
The red button that 300 people have already pressed
The feature Leno kept returning to was not the speed or the price but the Safe Return system: a single red button accessible to any passenger that hands full control of the aircraft to its avionics. The plane finds the nearest airport, communicates with air traffic control via text-based data link, and lands itself. Bergwall confirmed that across the SR series and the Vision Jet combined, more than 300 people have been returned to their families because of that parachute and automation technology. The airframe parachute on the Vision Jet, rated at 6,000 square feet for an aircraft weighing 6,000 pounds, deploys from the nose rather than the tail.
In the air, Leno took the controls after Bergwall switched off the autopilot. The sensitivity caught him off guard. ‘It’s just the slightest input,’ he said, genuinely surprised. The electronic stability protection pushed back when he drifted outside a safe envelope, a function Bergwall compared to traction control in a car. A dedicated level button returns the aircraft to straight and level flight with one press and no further input from whoever is holding the stick.
Landing came in at around 88 knots with two red lights and two white lights on the glide slope indicator confirming the correct approach angle. After touchdown Leno sat quietly for a moment. ‘I’m stunned at how smooth it is and how quiet it is,’ he said. ‘You don’t even feel like you’re moving anything. You’re just sort of moving with your mind.’

At 10,000 feet, somewhere over the California coast with the autopilot disconnected, Leno held the stick and tried to keep a small green line centered on a white reference mark. He was not entirely sure he was doing it correctly. Bergwall told him he was right on it.
