M. Night Shyamalan is sitting on a bench under a tree outside his office, and he looks a little scared. That fear, he will tell you a moment later, is usually a sign he is doing something right. Thirty years into a filmmaking career that has shaped how audiences think about dread and surprise, the director is trying something genuinely new, stepping in front of the lens instead of behind it, on his own terms, with no script and no safety net.
A bench, a tree, and thirty years to undo
The bench is not a prop. His office gave it to him as a gift, and it lives outside under a tree where he goes, as he puts it, ‘to calm it down when I’m not feeling great, which is often.’ It is a strikingly unguarded admission from a filmmaker whose public persona has been defined by control and precision. But the candor is the point. Shyamalan describes the channel as a chance to ‘undo it a little bit’ and dismantle whatever stigmas have calcified in his own head over three decades of making movies. The permission he is granting himself is the permission to be, in his word, ‘not great.’
He is extending that same permission to the people who show up to watch. There is no promise of production value or a tight editorial format. What he is offering instead is reflection, and the particular kind of relationship that comes from letting someone see you think out loud rather than only ever see the finished product.
The tree planted for his father
Just beyond the bench, visible from where he sits, stands a tree the family planted for his father, who died this year. Shyamalan mentions it plainly, without ornamentation. ‘One day that’ll be a big tree,’ he says, and leaves it at that. The grief is present but not performed. The tree and the bench together form the small geography of whatever this chapter turns out to be.
He does not know what he will show, or what the people watching will show him in return. He says so directly: ‘I don’t know how this is going to be.’ For a man whose craft is built on knowing exactly where every scene is going, that honesty carries real weight.
