Fifty-seven years and one job he never wanted

Howal’s goal for the campaign is $150,000, intended to cover the Johnsons’ living expenses and ongoing medical costs. By Wednesday afternoon, more than 1,700 donors had pushed the total past $100,000, roughly two-thirds of the target, in a matter of days. Donors left comments alongside their contributions, many of them offering prayers for the couple.
For Don, the response has been genuinely disorienting in the best possible way. ‘It’s a joyful feeling,’ he said, his voice carrying the particular surprise of a man who did not ask for help and still cannot quite believe it arrived. Josephine, who has spent months managing the physical and emotional weight of her diagnosis, put the shift plainly: ‘I can face it. I think that’s a big difference.’
