Banana the Corgi Wins the 2026 Corgi Cup at Lumen Field During Seahawks Halftime

Banana hit the grass at Lumen Field and something shifted in her entirely. Off the field she is, by her handler’s own admission, sweet and cuddly. But once those paws touched the turf during halftime of the Seahawks vs. Chargers game, the 11-inch-tall, 20-pound Corgi became, in the announcer’s words, ‘an absolute park menace.’ She crossed the finish line first in the 2026 Corgi Cup championship race, beating out Henry and Thor in what came down to a photo finish in front of a roaring crowd.

Eight Corgis, eight origin stories, one finish line

The field for the 2026 Corgi Cup was anything but ordinary. Eight Corgis lined up across eight lanes, each introduced with the kind of fanfare usually reserved for heavyweight bouts. Rainey, the self-described Queen of the Pup Cup, arrived at ten inches tall and 22 pounds with a resume that includes paddle boarding and frisbee. Henry, born in New Orleans and now firmly planted in the Pacific Northwest, brought one blue eye and what the announcer called ‘a championship pedigree’ to lane two. Homer, a Texas native who apparently traded armadillo chasing for Northwest trail running, entered lane four with a three-mile personal best on local trails. Fitz, in lane five, came in as the reigning Palouse Corgi Dash champion. Thor, the tallest competitor at 18 inches, was described as the best-dressed dog in the field and a former college campus celebrity. And Potato, also 18 inches tall and 40 pounds, rounded out the lineup as a mountain-climbing fetch machine whose owners had their sights set on a Corgi Cup title.

Nola, introduced as a full-time tummy tax collector and part-time watermelon demolisher, drew a loud response from the crowd in lane six.

A first heat, a photo finish, and a champion named after a fruit

The format split the competition into a qualifying heat followed by a championship race. The first heat sent all eight Corgis charging down the field in what commentator Andre described simply as ‘chaos down here at the finish line.’ Banana, Henry, and Thor clawed their way into the top three and advanced to the final.

The championship race was tighter. Henry made a quick dash along the side, and for a moment it looked like the New Orleans-born competitor might take it. But Banana held on. The 2026 Corgi Cup went to the park menace from lane three, with the crowd at Lumen Field celebrating alongside co-commentator Carla Marie, who summed up the first heat with the only fair assessment available: ‘That was crazy, Andre.’

Potato, still undefeated in the mountains

Potato did not make the championship race. The 40-pound mountain climber from lane eight finished the qualifying heat without advancing, leaving the Corgi Cup dream for another year. The stats remain impressive regardless: Mount Townsend conquered, fetch machine status confirmed, championship hardware still pending.

Banana jogged back across that same Lumen Field grass, 20 pounds of park menace with a title to show for it, while the 12s around her made considerably more noise than any Corgi race probably deserves.
