The Stray Cat From Morocco Who Chose Her Family and Then Saw Snow for the First Time

Zara pressed herself against the window glass, eyes locked on something she had never seen before: snow. Her owner watched from a few feet away, stunned. ‘I’ve never seen her so interested,’ she said. ‘It was the purest reaction to something that I’d ever seen.’ That kind of wonder is rare, and Zara had traveled a long way to find it.

The cat who followed strangers through Morocco

It started on an anniversary trip to Morocco, where cats were everywhere. One small stray was different. She stayed close, following the couple wherever they went, through streets and stops that sent every other cat off in another direction. The decision came quietly, the way the best ones do: ‘This cat has kind of chosen us.’

What followed was months of logistics. Outreach to animal rescues, questions about international adoption, and eventually a plan that sent Alex flying out from JFK on a Saturday and landing in Casablanca the following Sunday morning. They got the boarding pass. They got to the plane. When Alex opened the carrier, Zara stepped out and sat directly on his lap.

Back home, an introduction to the resident cats required a screen door buffer zone and, eventually, a few extra nails and some duct tape to keep things civil. Winter arrived soon enough, and Zara discovered the window. Every time it snows now, she takes her spot there and holds the same wide-eyed expression that stopped her owner cold the first time. ‘Welcome to the Northeast,’ as one person put it.

Four kittens in the middle of nowhere

On the other side of the country, a very different rescue unfolded with far less warning. Someone who runs a nonprofit farm animal sanctuary in Southern California came across four kittens that had been dumped in an isolated spot. The reaction was immediate: ‘Who? Oh, people are such trash.’ She scooped them up anyway, then paused to figure out what came next.

She had moved to that area three years earlier specifically to run the sanctuary, which now houses 45 roosters, 49 hens, a turkey, a cockatiel, eight pigs, four goats, two rabbits, four dogs, and four cats. The farm is also home to rattlesnakes, coyotes, and bobcats, which made keeping newborn kittens there impossible. She found a foster quickly. All four kittens have since found permanent homes.

The screen door that needed extra nails

Back in the Northeast, that reinforced screen door is still standing between old residents and the Moroccan newcomer, though the standoff seems to have softened into something closer to coexistence.

Zara still returns to the window when the snow falls, watching flakes land on the other side of the glass with the same look that stopped her owner mid-sentence the first time she saw it. Some reactions, it turns out, do not fade with repetition.
