Woman Builds Squirrels a Tiny Resort Complete With a Fan and Cabana to Survive a Heat Wave

The squirrels in her backyard were not doing well. During a stretch of dangerously hot weather, the small animals needed relief fast, and the woman who watched over them decided that if she was going to help, she was going to do it properly. What followed was not a bowl of water left on a porch step. It was a full resort buildout, sourced from the thrift store and assembled with the kind of commitment usually reserved for home renovation projects.

Thrift store finds and a cabana nobody expected

The supplies came first. Standing in her yard with an armful of secondhand finds, she held them up and asked nobody in particular: ‘Do these not go perfect together?’ The fan went up. Then came a small private cabana, because the squirrels were no longer backyard visitors in her mind. They were resort guests. The all-you-can-eat buffet followed, arranged with the care of someone who takes the job seriously. The squirrels, for their part, understood the assignment immediately.

The birds, apparently, had opinions about the whole arrangement too.

From summer emergency to something more permanent

The setup began as a direct response to unusually extreme heat conditions, not a regular everyday feeding routine. But somewhere between the fan installation and the cabana, the thinking shifted. ‘I think that I need to do something that can last all year,’ she said, surveying the scene. ‘So, I think I’m going to make them a squirrel city. Like they need something a little bit more permanent on our property.’

The thrift store run that started as a heat-emergency fix had quietly become a long-term infrastructure plan.

The cabana, still assembled in the yard

The small cabana sits in the backyard, fan running, buffet stocked.

When the temperatures climbed to genuinely dangerous levels, a group of backyard squirrels somehow ended up with the nicest summer vacation in the whole neighborhood.
