Lillie Vehling Pulled Three Drowning Girls from Lake Washington One by One During Seafair

Lillie Vehling was sitting on the shore of Lake Washington during Seafair weekend, reading her book, when she glanced up between pages and saw three young girls struggling in the water roughly 15 yards out. What followed in the next few minutes would earn her a title she never sought and leave a community searching for words. For every parent who has ever looked away from the water for just a moment, her story is a sharp reminder of how fast things change.

Lillie grew up around the water. A college water polo player, swim lesson coach, and trained lifeguard, she had spent years learning to read what trouble looks like in open water. So when she saw those faces from where she was sitting, she did not hesitate.

Fifteen yards out and one girl already unconscious

She ran into Lake Washington and began pulling each girl to shore one by one. When she turned back for the last child, the situation had turned critical. The girl was unconscious and tangled in a small buoy. As Lillie described it: ‘It was wrapped up all around her. You could tell that she was desperately trying to grab it to save her own life. She wasn’t responding to me at this point. I knew I needed to get her out of the water as soon as possible.’

She did exactly that. All three girls reached shore before paramedics arrived. Seattle Fire reported that one of the three was transported to the hospital in stable condition. The other two did not require hospital care.

From the lakeshore to a knighthood

Seafair President Emily Cantrell heard about the rescue quickly and went looking for Lillie. When they found each other, Cantrell’s first move was simple. According to Cantrell, Lillie immediately asked if she was okay and whether she could give her a hug. That hug led to something more formal. Seafair knighted Lillie as Lady Guardian of Lake Washington, with military admirals and Seafair dignitaries gathering around her at the event.

Cantrell did not understate it: ‘What she did was extraordinary.’

To Lillie, the instinct felt plain. She had not been through anything like it personally, but her training had built a reflex that did not leave room for hesitation. ‘To save three people,’ she said afterward. ‘I didn’t think twice about myself. I’m just glad everyone’s safe.’

The book she set down near Genesee Park

A paperback, left open and face-down on the shore near Genesee Park in Seattle, one page read before the water demanded her full attention.

Lillie Vehling had been scanning the water between pages when she spotted the girls. She went back into that water three times.
