Alesso: Alesso Played a Full Live Set From the Top of the Empire State Building

Alesso Played a Full Live Set From the Top of the Empire State Building

The lights turned green, a smoke machine kicked in, and Alesso was standing on top of the Empire State Building, DJing above the Manhattan skyline. What would have seemed like a logistical impossibility for a live electronic performance became one of the most striking concert moments New York has witnessed in recent memory, a full DJ set played from one of the world’s most recognizable rooftops, with the city spread out in every direction below.

A set list that built toward something new

The performance moved through a catalogue of Alesso’s signature tracks, pulling crowds through euphoric highs with familiar anthems before arriving at something none of the audience had heard before. The energy peaked when Alesso addressed the crowd directly: ‘Other than it being amazing being up here at the Empire State Building, we also have this little song called Fight for Love that’s coming out tonight.’ He then introduced singer Caitlyn Aragon, who joined him live to debut the collaboration, her voice carrying over the open air above Midtown. The crowd responded loudly as the new track’s lyrics rolled out: ‘I’m going to light the dark, I’m going to fight for love tonight.’ For a world premiere, the setting was hard to top.

The physical reality of performing at that altitude added its own texture to the night. ‘Heat up here’ became a running refrain across the set, a phrase that captured something literal as much as musical. Alesso leaned into the New York crowd throughout, calling the borough by name, prompting singalongs, and reading the energy with the precision of someone who has spent years working festival main stages. When ‘Lose Myself’ hit, he paused the momentum just long enough to tell the crowd they already knew the words, and they did.

When Alesso called it unbelievable and meant it

At the close of the night, with the set winding down, Alesso spoke without the performance cadence that tends to smooth over real feeling. ‘This was unbelievable to be up here and DJ,’ he told the crowd. ‘I mean, it doesn’t get any better than this.’ He thanked Caitlyn Aragon a second time before the final run of tracks. Then, as the set drew to its actual close, he came back one more time: ‘For real. One last time, New York. Let’s do this.’

Caitlyn Aragon, mid-air

Caitlyn Aragon stood at the top of the Empire State Building and sang the live debut of ‘Fight for Love’ into open New York air, the city below her still moving at full speed.

The Empire State Building has hosted its share of spectacles, but a full electronic set with a live vocal debut performed at its summit, smoke machine and all, belongs in a category of its own. Alesso closed the night the same way he opened it: with New York, and with the heat.
