Olga Loiek sat down to study one afternoon and noticed something unsettling: within 90 seconds, her hand was already moving toward her phone. She studies computation and cognitive science at the University of Pennsylvania, so she knew enough to ask why. What she found was not a personality flaw or a motivation deficit. It was a measurable, reversible shift in brain chemistry that is quietly flattening the inner lives of millions of people who scroll, binge, and tap their way through every spare hour.

The hunger your brain cannot turn off

Curiosity, as scientists define it, is a kind of mental hunger. The brain is constantly scanning its environment, and the moment it detects a gap between what it knows and what it wants to know, it pushes hard to close that gap. That push is powered by dopamine, the neurotransmitter that generates motivational pull. When dopamine levels are healthy, the whole world feels worth engaging: books feel worth opening, conversations feel worth having, questions feel worth chasing down.

The problem is not that dopamine disappears. It is that it gets weaponized. Every new notification, every autoplay cue, every algorithmically-served surprise spike dopamine upward, which then dips below the baseline before recovering. Hit that system hundreds of times in a single scrolling session, day after day, and the brain notices the chronic elevation and adapts. It reduces the number of dopamine receptors so that less of the chemical gets registered, even when it is present. The baseline effectively drops. Normal activities, reading a chapter, following a conversation, sitting with an idea, no longer generate enough motivational signal to feel worth pursuing. Only the hyper-engineered feeds can still spike dopamine high enough to register.

Loiek is direct about what this produces: ‘They just assume that it’s a part of their personality, that they’re lazy, they’re unmotivated, they can’t focus, they think that they’re not curious and boring, which I think is very harmful because it keeps you in a fixed mindset.’

Three symptoms mark a dopamine overload. The first is an inability to hold focus for more than about 90 seconds before the hand reaches for the phone. The second is a blank mind at the dinner table: thousands of pieces of content consumed, not one worth repeating. The third is the quiet grief of feeling less interesting than you were five years ago, back when you went deep on subjects and had hobbies that actually held your attention.

A three-step reset that starts tonight

The fix Loiek outlines runs in three steps, and none of them require a dramatic life overhaul.

Step one is a dopamine fast lasting anywhere from one to seven days. The target is highest-stimulation behavior: algorithmic feeds, binge-watching, video games. The internet itself is not banned. Articles are fine. What must go is the infinite-scroll machinery that engineers the dopamine spike. Loiek’s own workaround is to delete the apps entirely and use social platforms in a desktop browser only, making the experience inconvenient enough that passive consumption stops while direct messages to friends remain accessible.

Step two is movement. Thirty minutes of walking a day is described as a strong start. Exercise increases both dopamine production and receptor sensitivity, restoring the natural motivation that overconsumption suppressed.

Step three happens tonight. Instead of opening a feed, pick one thing that snagged your attention recently and spend 20 minutes going deep: a long-form article, a run of follow-up questions to an AI, a rabbit hole with no destination. The point is to let the brain remember what genuine interest actually feels like from the inside.

The habit she built over years of testing

Loiek still uses Instagram. She also still deletes it the moment it starts feeling overstimulating, sometimes for a few weeks at a stretch, and then reinstalls it when the pull has faded. The rhythm is self-correcting rather than perfectionist, which is part of why it holds.

The curiosity is still there. It never left. It only lost the dopamine headroom to act.
