A gray, desaturated Star Wars fan film sits on a timeline looking like it was shot inside a rain cloud. That is not a broken camera or a bad location: it is a deliberate choice called log, and knowing what to do with it is one of the small unlocks that separates a first project from a finished one. DaVinci Resolve 21, currently in public beta and free to download, is the same application that colorists use on Hollywood films, and for anyone staring at its interface for the first time, the sheer size of it can feel less like a creative tool and more like the helm of a spaceship.
Seven pages, one program, and what you can actually ignore
Resolve is not one app. It is several apps sharing a single timeline, and the row of page buttons along the bottom is the clearest map through it. The Edit page is the hub, the place where clips are trimmed, ordered, and assembled into a story. Next to it sits the Fusion page for visual effects and motion graphics. The Color page handles grading. Fairlight is a full audio workstation. The Deliver page handles the final render. The Cut page, the Photo page, and the Media page exist, but according to the instructor behind Ground Control Film School, they can be ignored roughly 90 percent of the time. He is direct about it: ‘You can pretty much just ignore the cut page, the photo page, and the media page 90% of the time.’
Importing footage is as simple as dragging folders straight into the bin area of the Media Pool, which keeps everything organized in named folders rather than dumping it into one flat pile. Once clips live in the pool, they can be previewed in the Source Viewer, trimmed to their best moments using in and out points, and dragged into the timeline. The two keyboard shortcuts that matter most are Control-Backslash to split a clip at the playhead and Control-Shift-Left-Bracket or Right-Bracket for ripple trims that automatically close the gap left behind. Learning those two shortcuts, the instructor says, is genuinely enough to qualify for a paid editing job.
Making the gray footage look like a movie in two menu clicks
The log footage problem is solved not by manually pushing sliders but through color management. Inside Project Settings, switching Color Science to ‘DaVinci YRGB Color Managed,’ unchecking automatic color management, and setting the color processing mode to ‘HDR DaVinci Wide Gamut Intermediate’ takes about 30 seconds. The second step is selecting all the media in the pool, right-clicking, choosing Input Color Space, and picking the camera profile. For the Star Wars footage, shot on a Blackmagic camera, that means selecting ‘Blackmagic Design Film Gen 5.’ The image shifts from gray and flat to something that actually looks like a movie.
From there, the Color page workflow is built around three moves: grouping all clips together so a shared grade can be applied across the whole project at once, grabbing a still from the strongest shot to use as a reference, and then adjusting each clip individually against that reference using a node structure labeled E-C-T-O, which stands for exposure, contrast, temperature and saturation, and other stuff. Each letter lives in its own labeled node so any single step can be toggled off without disturbing the rest. The Fairlight page follows the same logic, using the mixer’s channel strips, a dialogue bus, a compressor preset called ‘dialogue level expander,’ and the EQ to shape how each track sits in the mix.
On the Deliver page, two render jobs go into the queue before anything exports. The first uses the H.265 Master preset at 3840×2160, the version that goes to YouTube. The second uses ProRes 4:2:2 HQ with all timeline tracks exported as separate audio stems, giving a future editor the option to remove or replace the music or dialogue without starting from scratch.
The node that does not connect to anything
In the Fusion node graph, a blur node sits in the workspace, disconnected from both the media input and the media output. Its blur size is set high. It does nothing to the image.
That is the core mechanic of the whole page. A node only affects the image when it is wired into the flowchart. Drop it anywhere else and it sits there, completely inert, waiting.
