The 1916 Bird Treaty That Now Shields Over 800 Species Across Five Nations

On August 16, 1916, the US and Canada signed the Migratory Bird Treaty to stop unregulated hunting across their shared border. Now expanded to include Mexico, Japan, and Russia, the agreement protects over 800 species across five nations and remains one of the largest coordinated wildlife protection efforts in the Western Hemisphere.
