Vito had ten minutes to make his case, and he made it without moving an inch. While other puppies bounded around the room during a puppy yoga class, he planted himself on one woman’s mat and refused to leave, even after she showered him with affection hoping he would wander off to someone else. He did not wander. When she finally turned around to look at her boyfriend, he already had the expression that said everything: they were bringing home a dog that day.
The mat that started it all
The woman had been to puppy yoga before, and the usual experience is puppies cycling through the room, visiting everyone, spreading the chaos evenly. This session was different. She had barely settled into her practice when Vito arrived on her mat and decided that was simply where he lived now. She tried to redirect him with pets and attention, fully expecting him to get restless and chase another yogi across the studio floor. He stayed. Ten minutes passed. The decision, she said later, made itself: ‘In that moment, I knew that I really wanted to adopt him.’
Her boyfriend’s face confirmed what she already felt. There was no long discussion on the drive home. There was just Vito.
From only child to big brother
Life after Vito arrived ran at his pace, which was fast and occasionally destructive. Walks, playdates with other dogs, a lot of jumping, and an enthusiastic commitment to causing what his family described plainly as mayhem. He earned the label ‘very spoiled’ without any apparent shame about it, and settled into his role as the undisputed center of the household.
Then the household changed. Vito, apparently attuned to the shift before anyone explained it to him, began resting his head on his owner’s stomach during her pregnancy. When the baby, Luca, finally came home, Vito spent the first days simply studying this small new human. The family had been nervous about the introduction. Vito, for his part, had to genuinely recalibrate. The chaotic tornado energy that had defined his personality had to slow down around someone fragile. He learned patience in a way that surprised everyone watching.
The moment that settled it came quietly, in the family room. Luca pulled himself upright and took his first steps. He did not aim for his parents. He walked toward Vito. From that point on, the two ran loops around the house together, Luca laughing, Vito right behind him, and toy deliveries became Vito’s self-assigned responsibility.
The yogi who never got back to yoga
Somewhere out there, the yoga mat that Vito refused to leave is probably still being used in a studio, holding other people in other poses. Vito has not returned to it.
He is at home running after a toddler instead, which, by all available evidence, was always the plan.
