Phat Gus and Marty Face Off in Mark Rober’s Backyard Squirrelympics 3.0 Summer Games

Phat Gus, the heavyset backyard regular, launched himself off a custom-built spring ramp and stuck a mid-air transfer onto a rotating obstacles course in Mark Rober’s latest backyard engineering spectacle, the Squirrelympics 3.0 Summer Games.

The Obstacle Course Showdown

Rather than continuing his long-running battle to keep squirrels away from his bird feeders, Rober engineered a full multi-event competitive course and turned the animals against each other. Competitors including Phat Gus and Marty navigated a series of purpose-built challenge stations, each dispensing acorn rewards for successful completion.

Marty, a leaner and notably more agile competitor, posted faster crossing times on the balance-beam segment, while Phat Gus relied on sheer momentum to power through the spring-loaded launch gate. Each station was designed with a specific mechanical trigger that only released a food reward upon a clean run.

Why This Matters

Footage shared by Mark Rober demonstrates that backyard wildlife engineering, when pointed toward play rather than deterrence, produces genuinely competitive and repeatable animal behavior worth watching.
