Nick DiGiovanni: Nick DiGiovanni's $10,000 Mystery Box Showdown Against YouTube's Biggest Chefs

Nick DiGiovanni’s $10,000 Mystery Box Showdown Against YouTube’s Biggest Chefs

Nick DiGiovanni lifted the lid on a box containing A5 Matsusaka Wagyu, a live blue European lobster, black Burgundy truffles, Almas caviar, and the world’s most expensive chocolate bar, then had roughly 30 minutes to turn all of it into one dish. That pressure is exactly the kind that exposes the difference between a chef who can cook and one who can perform under chaos, and the gap between $1 and $10,000 worth of ingredients only made the stakes sharper. Four of YouTube’s most-watched food creators flew in from across the world to find out which side of that gap they belonged on.

Instant ramen, canned corn, and ten minutes to prove yourself

The opening round gave each chef a $1 mystery box containing instant ramen, canned corn, Baby Bell cheese, and a jalapeno. Ten minutes on the clock. One person going home. DiGiovanni tasted every ingredient before touching a pan, something none of the others did, then built a sweet corn soup with a ramen cheese crisp and jalapeno oil. Chef Rush assembled a crispy ramen nest with charred corn and cheese fondue, while Max constructed a ramen-crusted jalapeno popper using the Baby Bell wax rind as a sauce bowl. Bashi, who had traveled 18 hours from Japan for the challenge, made a creamy miso ramen and added sugar, which pushed the dish unmistakably into dessert territory.

The four chefs judged each other by secret iPad vote, and the result was not close. DiGiovanni explained his reasoning plainly: ‘Because of how salty it was, I could only take one bite after that. I felt it was inedible.’ Bashi collected the most votes and headed home, telling the group on his way out, ‘I’m going to remember this.’

A $100 box, a jackfruit nobody could crack, and thirty push-ups for a favor

Round two raised the stakes with a whole chicken, sourdough bread, fresh honeycomb, finger limes, and a whole jackfruit. Max disclosed partway through that he is allergic to finger limes, which meant cooking a dish he could not safely taste. DiGiovanni attempted chicken katsu sandos with jackfruit slaw, using the sourdough both as breading and as the actual sandwich bread. Rush made a French toast fried chicken plate. When DiGiovanni needed extra jackfruit, he offered Rush 30 push-ups in exchange. Rush accepted, DiGiovanni hit 30, and Rush handed over the fruit, then admitted he had never actually needed it back.

Bashi returned as the blind judge for round two and eliminated Chef Rush after finding a bone fragment in his dish. Rush’s crispy ramen nest, it turned out, carried a hidden structural hazard.

The $10,000 finale and a forgotten chocolate bar

Three chefs remained for the final round. DiGiovanni built what he called a billionaire‘s BLT, curing thin slices of Matsusaka Wagyu into bacon, layering heirloom tomatoes and blue lobster, and finishing with truffle mayonnaise and Almas caviar. The problem: when Bashi and Rush checked for all five required ingredients, the world’s most expensive chocolate bar was missing from the plate entirely.

Max went the other direction, keeping every ingredient as intact and unaltered as possible: spicy lobster tempura alongside A5 Wagyu, with truffle shavings and caviar placed directly on the beef. The judges questioned whether the truffle presence was sufficient. DiGiovanni’s pasta choice, a hand-shaped tortillone stuffed with seared Wagyu and lobster claw, finished with a chocolate-and-lobster-shell bordelaise, drew the warmest response from both Rush and Bashi, who called the turnaround remarkable for a 30-minute window.

The caviar tin sitting at the edge of DiGiovanni’s station

A small tin of Almas caviar, reportedly worth more than DiGiovanni’s first car, sat untouched at the edge of his station for most of the final round. He spotted it with under a minute left and barely made it onto the plate.

Bashi, the man who traveled 18 hours only to be voted out in round one over a dessert-flavored ramen, returned to decide who among the remaining three cooked the best dish using a box worth more than most people’s monthly rent. The same group that sent him home handed him the final word.
