Airrack was already inside the freezer, crammed into a wooden box disguised as a storage pallet, when the contestants on the other side of the glass started talking about the suspicious thing in the fridge. The stakes were simple and personal: MrBeast had told him flat-out that he could never go undetected inside one of his productions, and Airrack had flown to Greenville, North Carolina to prove him wrong. What followed was a single night of sweating through a fake cameraman disguise, making small talk with people who had been living in a grocery store for 115 days, and holding a wooden door shut from the inside while four contestants tried to pry it open.
A chair, a shelf, and a very bad patio corner
Before the grocery store, Airrack ran two warm-up rounds. Against the Sidemen, Europe’s biggest YouTube group, he had himself welded into a prop chair and smuggled past a gate and into the mansion where they were filming a sleepover special. He survived six fully grown British men tearing the house apart for nearly an hour before one of them circled back to the weird little corner on the patio. ‘Chair person, reveal yourself,’ came the shout, and the chair came open. Point to the YouTubers.
The next stop was a kitchen studio where Nick DiGiovanni was filming a last-meal ranking special. Airrack had positioned himself on a high shelf above the set, disguised inside a display bag of rice, with a remote-controlled smoke detector secretly planted in the kitchen as a distraction. Nick spent two hours below him rating meals, including Airrack’s own Taco Bell submission, which Nick sent straight to F tier without hesitation. When the smoke detector triggered at the wrong moment and Nick’s crew confiscated it, Airrack had about ten minutes left on the clock. He survived them. ‘Put a W on the board,’ he called out when the shoot wrapped, dropping from the shelf to a stunned kitchen. One point each.
115 days versus one very long night
The grocery store was the decider. MrBeast had trapped 100 people inside months earlier; four remained, eating their way through the entire store inventory to win a million dollars. Airrack entered dressed as a cameraman, introduced himself to staff as Russell, and squeezed a full pallet-sized wooden shelter through the freezer door while MrBeast was distracted by contestant Juan presenting a birthday gift on the other side of the store. As Airrack put it afterward: ‘Juan didn’t even know I was here, but him distracting Jimmy was insanely clutch.’
For the next several hours he lived quietly in the freezer, slipping out once to grab breakfast foods from the shelves and stopping to take a group photo with all four contestants, none of whom connected ‘Russell the cameraman’ to anything unusual. He made it to pajama time inside his wooden box with six hours remaining.
Then one contestant noticed the box. Then another. Then all four gathered at the freezer door, debating whether they were allowed to open it. Airrack braced the door shut from inside in the dark.
The moment the box opened
The door held for a few minutes. Then it did not. ‘What are you doing here?’ one of the contestants asked through the gap. ‘I was trying to secretly live here,’ Airrack answered. Final score: YouTubers two, Airrack one.
He stayed on for a few hours anyway and played pickleball with the contestants who had just caught him. The four people who had spent 115 days inside that store knew its every corner better than anyone, and they had noticed a wooden box that had not been there the day before. They were not even playing his game when they found him.
Juan, still holding that birthday present
Somewhere on the other side of the store, in the moment that bought Airrack just enough time to squeeze his shelter through the freezer door, Juan stood with a gift he had made for Jimmy’s birthday, waiting to hand it over.
Airrack lost the grocery store by a handful of hours, but he left Greenville with a clear message for every YouTuber whose set he had already been inside, and a few he had not reached yet: he would be watching, and from much closer than they think.
