Cory Cotton stood at the edge of a baseball field, microphone in hand, staring down a crowd of real fans who had no idea what was coming. The stakes were simple and humiliating: sing God Bless America in front of everyone, starting on a note he almost immediately admitted was way too high. For Dude Perfect’s 250th Overtime episode, this was the grand finale, and it landed exactly the way 250 episodes of chaos had trained it to.
OT250 was built as a full America-themed blowout, and the crew treated the milestone with the same energy a small town puts into a Fourth of July parade: loud, specific, and occasionally involving a live bird. The episode ran all four of the show’s signature segments, Cool Not Cool, Get Crafty, Top 10, and Wheel Unfortunate, each one draped in red, white, and blue.
When a bald eagle named Petronis walks into the room
Cool Not Cool opened with Garrett bringing out a signed Miracle on Ice jersey, the whole team, which he bought for his own office. Before the vote could settle, Ty escalated. He had arranged for a live bald eagle named Petronis to land at the Cool Not Cool desk, talons and all. The room went silent in the way rooms go silent when something genuinely unscripted is happening. Ty noted that bald eagles became the national symbol in 1782, spent years on the endangered species list, and were removed from it in the year 2000. The vote was unanimous super cool. Cody, meanwhile, took the wheel of a made-in-Oregon marine boat and ripped it across the lake at speed that left everyone soaked. He received what the crew openly called a sympathy super cool, which, as Garrett put it: ‘Was it earned? No. Was it deserved? No. Was it given? Yes.’
Baseball bats, candy stripes, and a candy flag that would not stay glued
Get Crafty tasked every member with building an American flag. Garrett went with a candy flag using Swedish Fish, Starburst, Jolly Ranchers, and marshmallows, a format that judged beautifully until intern Jackson noticed the candy had not been glued down. Cody built his flag out of painted baseball bats arranged in rows, each bat representing a member of the military from revolutionary times through modern service. Sparty constructed a wooden waving flag with hand-painted stripes and admitted to a last-minute chainsaw adjustment. Cory went construction paper. Jackson awarded first place to Sparty, with Cody’s bat flag earning third and a permanent spot in Jackson’s office rather than back in Cody’s hands.
The Top 10 Most American Things Ever ran from number ten, American dental care and braces, up through trucks at nine, free refills at eight, monster trucks at seven, the Statue of Liberty at six, the moon landing at five, brisket at four, the Dallas Cowboys at three, and reached its number-one slot with what Ty called ‘freedom units’: yards, feet, inches, and Fahrenheit. His case was straightforward. ‘When you say it’s 100 outside, everyone knows it’s hot.’
The name drawn from the hat
The wheel draw came down to Cory after three eliminations cleared Garrett, Sparty, and Ty. The wheel landed on singing God Bless America at a real baseball game in front of real fans.
Cory walked out to cheers, acknowledged he started too high immediately, pushed through the entire song anyway, and closed on a final note that the crowd caught and carried with him. He thanked Texas on the way off.
Petronis the bald eagle, perched and unbothered through the whole voting process, had long since returned to wherever eagles go after making their point.
