Why David Bowie Outlasted Peter Frampton by 40 Years, According to Science

In the late 1960s, Peter Frampton and David Bowie were coming up in the same London rock scene, playing to overlapping crowds, chasing the same cultural moment. One of them built a career that peaked brilliantly and then faded within a decade. The other kept reinventing himself for 40 years and released what critics called a masterpiece two days before he died. The gap between them, it turns out, is not a matter of talent. It is a matter of range. Researcher and author David Epstein has spent years assembling evidence from comic books, Nobel Prize labs, patent offices, and 18 million scientific papers, and the finding keeps repeating: the people who look scattered and directionless early on are often the ones who produce the most enduring, original work.

The comic book finding that flipped the conventional wisdom

Researchers tracked creators across 234 comic book publishers and measured everything that should logically predict a blockbuster: years of experience, publisher resources, previous output. None of it mattered. High repetition, doing the same kind of comic over and over, actually had a negative association with creative performance. The single biggest predictor of a blockbuster was the number of different genres a creator had worked across. More striking still, individual creators who had worked across four or more genres outperformed entire teams of specialists. One person with range beat a group of narrow experts combined. The study’s own title posed the question: ‘Superman or the Fantastic 4?’ The answer, Epstein notes, was both are good, but Superman is better.

Stanford researcher Justin Berg ran a study of nearly 70,000 artists and 3 million songs to understand why some creators sustain success for decades while others burn out after a single hit. He identified two dimensions that matter most: novelty and variety. Here is the painful irony he uncovered. Novelty in early work is actually a negative predictor of initial success. Weird and different means fewer first hits. But if a creator does break through with a novel portfolio, that same novelty becomes the engine of sustained success. It makes them more adaptable, gives them more to draw from, and teaches them more than a conventional portfolio ever could. Frampton, Epstein explains, ‘built his career on one mode, and when that mode stopped resonating with people, there was nowhere else for him to go.’ Bowie’s constant reinventions, the folk detours, the glam, the ambient, the electronic, the much-hated Tin Machine phase, those were not failures. They were his education.

From Nobel labs to a frog floating in midair

Sociologist Brian Uzi at Northwestern University analyzed 18 million scientific papers looking for what makes a paper genuinely reshape a field. The pattern: the most impactful papers combined mostly conventional knowledge with an injection of unusual combinations imported from outside the field. He described creativity as an import-export business of ideas. The spark that elevates work from competent to groundbreaking comes from bringing something unexpected in from somewhere else.

Physicist Andre Geim is the only person in history to win both an Ignoble Prize and a Nobel Prize. The Ignoble came for levitating a frog with strong electromagnets. The Nobel came for isolating graphene, the world’s first single-atom-thick material, with extraordinary properties of strength and electrical conductivity. What connects them is his process. Every Friday evening, after formal work ended, Geim and his colleagues would pursue whatever curiosity struck them, no goals, no funding applications, no predetermined direction. It was during one of those sessions that they were ripping thin strips of graphite pencil lead with scotch tape, and that is what led directly to graphene.

Nobel laureate Francis Arnold, an engineer by training, made a similar point when asked after her Nobel win whether she was self-conscious about not being a specialist. She said the biggest opportunities in science lie at the interfaces between fields. She had taken optimization methods from engineering and combined them with molecular biology to solve problems in chemistry. Everyone thought it was nuts. After decades of applications, it proved to be extraordinary.

The man who carried books through a flood before he ever picked up a brush

Vincent Van Gogh worked as an art dealer until he was fired. Then came 14-hour days as a teacher and handyman, a stint as a bookseller working 8 a.m. to midnight, a period training as a pastor where he wore candles in a hat to study late at night. Latin and Greek did not come easily and he flamed out. He became an itinerant preacher in coal country. That did not work either. Each time, he wrote home to his parents: ‘You will never have to worry about me again. I found my calling.’ Each time, he failed. Nearing 30, with no possessions and no achievements, he picked up a drawing guide written for children and started sketching the countryside around him. Even then, progress was slow. He went through a phase convinced that all color was merely shades of black, then reversed completely and decided there was no black in nature at all. He painted only figures, then abandoned that when it did not suit him. Epstein’s point is direct: those were not detours. They were training. Everything Van Gogh is remembered for, Starry Night, the Sunflowers, all of it, came from the final two years of his life, when he combined his experiments into something no one had ever seen.

Andre Geim’s scotch tape and pencil lead

The scotch tape sits on a lab bench somewhere in the story of graphene, an almost laughably low-tech instrument at the origin of one of the most important material discoveries in modern science.

Researchers have identified something called the creative cliff illusion: the belief that your best ideas come quickly in a flash of insight or not at all. The research shows the opposite. The best ideas tend to come later in a brainstorming process, not at the start. Most people quit before the connections have had time to form. The cliff, Epstein says plainly, is not real.
