Panthar is sitting alone in the dark, talking to a ghost that keeps insisting it is not a ghost, when the Pandemonium detector goes off and a few hundred shadow monsters materialize outside the base. That is a Tuesday for the MrBeast team in Beast Animations’ new animated series debut, a chaotic, genuinely funny superhero story that turns out to have a surprisingly tender core underneath all the monster-wrestling and dislocated shoulders.
A team that mostly functions, when it remembers to
The setup arrives fast. Cities are falling to creatures called the Shroud, shadow monsters with a wet, flaky texture that Panthar, leader of the MrBeast team, describes with unmistakable disgust every single time he touches one. The original lab is now a smoldering crater. The team is operating out of a temporary base while rebuilding, and their supply of Pandemonium Particles, the energy source that powers everything, is down to one briefcase. Jimmy, who is heading to Arizona to meet Tariq over something he found, leaves Panthar in charge with a direct order: figure out why the Shroud are suddenly using coordinated tactics, get the lab running, and keep the team ready.
The team includes Silver Bite, Spike and Sprout, Echo Wing, a plant-based creature called Fly Trap who communicates exclusively through slurping sounds, a robot called BeastBot whose primary contribution is announcing the probability of child death at the least helpful moments, and a newly arrived ice-powered hero named Tundra Claw, whose presence Panthar resents and then quietly respects by the end of the episode. A kid named Billy, who was live-streaming from his bedroom when a shadow monster came through the window and Panthar threw him out of it while attempting a rescue, ends up at the base with a Beast Labs agent badge because his parents need locating. There is also Kevin, who is enormous, emits electricity at full power, and then sleeps for up to two days afterward.
The battle sequence in the city establishes what the episode is really about. The Shroud are not just bigger than before. They are watching. Every formation the team tries, the monsters have already prepared for. ‘Every move we make, they’ve already seen, and they’ve prepped for it,’ Panthar realizes mid-fight. The revelation that something may be controlling the Shroud, possibly a figure named Shadow Coil who was spotted using a portal gun at the American Dream Mall in New Jersey before teleporting the entire building to Death Valley, reframes the whole war.
Banana died, and then things got complicated
Running parallel to all of this is Panthar’s grief. His best friend Banana sacrificed himself using Pandemonium Particles, exploded, and ended up in a pocket dimension inside the Pandemoniumverse, which turns out to be located inside the American Dream Mall, now sitting in the desert. Banana, delighted to discover he has infinite creative power and zero responsibility, spends his time in the pocket dimension generating swarms shaped like blenders, dinosaurs, and, memorably, a ‘cousin I maybe have a crush on.’ He has no interest in coming back.
Tundra Claw, using her ice powers, creates a small frozen figure of Banana as a hula dancer and gives it to Panthar. He laughs. It is the first time he laughs. ‘He would’ve liked you,’ Panthar says, quietly.
The episode closes on a race. Nolan’s Pandemonium detector, which works by using the Shroud’s hunger for Pandemonium to track concentrations of it, has just pinged a reading larger than anything the destroyed lab ever produced. The source: the American Dream Mall. Ninety-four percent of Shroud exit vectors are pointing straight at it. Panthar, who just received a phone call from Banana confirming he is alive and waiting there, decides to go alone because an unpredictable single agent cannot be countered by monsters who study patterns. Tundra Claw invites herself along.
The briefcase, left on the table
The one briefcase of remaining Pandemonium Particles sits in the base.
Panthar told them to use it only when absolutely necessary. Nobody has touched it. The Shroud have a head start.
By the time the full team gets the base ready and the detector finished, Panthar is already moving through the dark toward a mall in the desert where his best friend is waiting, and hundreds of shadow monsters are ahead of him on the road.
