For two weeks, the neighbors on one residential street fell asleep to the same sound: a dog crying somewhere beneath a house, every single night. Nobody could get to her. She was hiding there with nowhere to go after being scared by fireworks. Nobody could coax her out. When the Hope For Paws rescue team finally arrived, one of them took a moment just to locate her in the dark before anyone else moved. ‘It took me a while to find him,’ the rescuer said, scanning the crawl space, ‘but you’ll see.’ What they found was a frightened, hungry dog pressed into the farthest corner she could reach, and a team willing to stay as long as it took.
Sausage, patience, and a dog who needed both
The approach was slow and deliberate. A rescuer crouched at the opening of the crawl space and held out a piece of sausage, keeping her voice low and steady. ‘Okay, kiddo. You hungry? Come here, you beautiful baby.’ The dog did not bolt toward the food. She watched. Rescuers gave her space and time, understanding that a dog who had spent two weeks hiding under a house was not going to walk out on a stranger’s first invitation. After trying to coax her out with food and positive encouragement they had no choice but to use a gentle snare to pull the dog safely from the house.
Eventually she came close enough to be reached. One rescuer called her ‘sweet girl.’ Another noticed the dog’s coloring and said she looked like a Snickers bar, a small, warm observation that broke the tension of the long wait. When she finally emerged, the relief in the team’s voices was immediate and unguarded. ‘Come on, sweetheart. Come on. Hi, sweet girl.’ They named her Dulce De Leche

Once safely at Cares, she was treated to a warm bath, the water was brown with dirt. She was still scared and unsure. The Doctor examined her, she was a little underweight but overall healthy. Thankfully LA Animal Rescue was there to take her in and get her healthy and restore her spirit and confidence. After a few months she whole again, with the zoomies running around the yard, completely carefree and loving life. The foster parents Troy and Jeff loved her so much that they kept her and gave her a forever home.
The detail that lingered longest from the rescue was the offhand nickname. Somewhere between the sausage and the final coaxing, one of the rescuers looked at the dog’s coat pattern and just said it: she looked like a Snickers bar. It was the kind of specific, unscripted observation that only happens when a team has been holding its breath long enough to finally exhale.
The dog who cried under the house every night for two weeks was out. She was eating. She was being called beautiful. The crying, at last, had stopped.
